Electric mobility

Inclusion of electric mobility in sustainable mobility policies

​Electric mobility, as part of an integrated mobility system, must be balanced and integrated into the Avoid, Change and Improve framework (Figure 1).

Refers to the use of vehicles propelled by systems that use electrical energy to move people or goods.

In this context, sustainable urban mobility policies should consider comprehensive actions that take into account the mobility pyramid and its objectives: first, reducing the need for travel, followed by shifting to energy-efficient modes of transport and, finally, improving the efficiency of technology. Figure 1 shows how electric mobility fits into the Avoid, Shift and Improve framework. Within the Improve pillar, electric mobility functions to support the last-mile transfer of transportation systems, both for public transport and freight transportation. Also, in this pillar the transition to electric mobility can serve as a catalyst for clean public transport and fleet renewal (UN-Habitat & UEMI 2022, p. 5).

Electric vehicles are vehicles powered solely by electric energy sources and whose battery charging exclusively uses this type of energy source. In addition, they must produce zero direct polluting emissions. In no case shall vehicles that have self-generation systems with internal combustion source, regardless of their configuration, be understood as electric vehicles;” (LOCE 2024 p. 16).

Electric mobility offers multiple benefits that have a positive impact in several areas:

Environmental benefits

Electric vehicles do not emit polluting gases, which contributes to improving air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Economic benefits

Electric mobility can reduce operating costs due to the lower price of electricity compared to fossil fuels and the lower maintenance required by electric vehicles.

Social benefits

By reducing air pollution, respiratory diseases are reduced and public health is improved. In addition, electric vehicles generate less noise, contributing to quieter urban environments.
